How does Title I work?
The
federal government
provides money to each
state to fund the Title
I program. This is the
"basic grant." The
Illinois State Board of
Education then allocates
money to school
districts based on the
number of low-income
families. Schools whose
populations exceed the
district average for
free and reduced lunches
qualify for Title I
funds. Although schools
are chosen to be Title I
schools on the basis of
these counts, Title I
students are chosen by
the greatest educational
need, not income.
Which of the Quincy
Public Schools are
currently "Title One"
schools?
Currently, Baldwin
Intermediate School,
Berrian Elementary,
Dewey Elementary, Irving
Elementary and
Washington Elementary
operate school wide Title
One programs.
How is the funding used?
Most
of our Title One funding
is used to pay the
salaries of teachers to
provide reading instruction
to supplement the
instruction provided by
the classroom teacher
students needing
additional support.
Funding is also used to
purchase instructional
materials, professional
development for
teachers, and to support
parent involvement
activities.
