Highly Decorated Senior Master Sergeant James E. Clemens Jr., Class of 1995, Retires from U.S. Air Force

Senior Master Sergeant James E. Clemens Jr. is the Senior Enlisted Leader, Western Region, for the Defense Intelligence Agency, Chief Information Office. Senior Master Sergeant Clemens was born in Quincy, Illinois on November 30th, 1976. He attended Quincy Senior High School, graduating in June 1995. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Air Force on June 28th, 1995 and left for basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. Upon completion of basic training, he attended 3C0X1 technical training at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. After his initial training he received orders to Hill AFB, Utah as a tactical phone switch technician and network administrator. During his tour he deployed to Tuzla AB, Bosnia-Herzegovina where he performed system and desktop administration. He then received orders to Patrick AFB, Florida in 1998 and was assigned as a system and network administrator at the Air Force Technical Applications Center. During his time he deployed to Tuzla AB, Bosina-Herzegovina again in support of the war in Kosovo. In May 2000, SMSgt Clemens transitioned to Nellis AFB, Nevada. During this assignment he deployed to Kuwait following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. In May of 2003 SMSgt Clemens transitioned to Yongsan AG, Seoul, Republic of Korea where he served as NCOIC and Global Command and Control Systems Administrator. In 2004, Sergeant Clemens was selected for an assignment with the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Maryland. He spent three years as NCOIC of intrusion detection analysts and administrators before being selected as Operations NCOIC to stand up the Air Force’s first Network Operations Squadron. After this tour, SMSgt Clemens was assigned to Scott AFB, Illinois where he stood up the Air Mobility Command’s first cyber threat and defense cell. During his assignment to Scott AFB he deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as the NCOIC of Joint Communications for the International Security Assistance Force and as the NCOIC of NATO COMSEC for Regional Command East under the 101st and 1st Cavalry Divisions. In 2012, SMSgt Clemens applied and was selected for the Defense Intelligence Agency Senior Enlisted Advisor position. During his tour SMSgt Clemens has served as the top enlisted advisor for three combatant commands. He has served as the CIO’s Air Force superintendent ad has advised ADCON military operations for CIO since its inception.
His military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
