“PCL” Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy Training

Participants will learn how to implement a framework for literacy learning in all K – 8 classrooms.  This framework for literacy utilizes a workshop approach for meeting the needs of all students—including a balance of whole group, small group, and individual conferences within an integrated, inquiry-based curriculum.

TEACHER INDUCTION

This workshop includes the following topics: orientation to district, District standards/evaluation, focus core curriculum areas, Illinois State Standards, District curriculum guides, classroom setup/environment/climate, writing lesson plans, homework guidelines, grading scale/grade book, parent volunteers, daily schedules, planning vs. preparation, preparing for a substitute, home/school communication, classroom management, opening day procedures, other support personnel, diverse student needs. First year teachers are matched with a Mentor Teacher for two years and attend monthly sessions held during the school year. During the second year, TESA (Teacher Expectations Student Achievement) training is the focus of the monthly sessions.

A FRAMEWORK FOR UNDERSTANDING POVERTY (Ruby Payne)

The District has staff who are certified trainers for Ruby Payne’s Framework for Understanding Poverty.

How does poverty impact learning, work habits, or decision making? The reality of being poor brings out a survival mentality and turns attention away from opportunities taken for granted by everyone else. If you work with people in poverty, a bit of understanding of how different their world is from yours will be invaluable.

Designed for educators at all levels, but helpful to counselors, administrators, and support staff, this seminar provides practical, real-world support and guidance for overcoming barriers and helping others succeed.
