QAVTC Blended Learning Course Implementation Model

Implementation Date: August, 2018

Overview: The QAVTC Blended Learning Program involves an alternate delivery method for career and technical education classes whereby students would learn course curriculum content through a web-based platform completed at their home school, blended with a series of limited lab/live work experience days conducted at QAVTC or in some cases as feasible in partnership with a local business providing a site and on-site mentor in a job shadow/internship scenario. Various online platforms may be deployed depending on the specific course.

QAVTC Online Blended Learning Courses to be offered for 18-19:
Automotive Technology I
Diesel Equipment Technology I
Graphic Design I

Online Course Content Delivery: It will be expected that the students enrolled in the blended learning would have a designated hour of the school day when they would be working online to complete learning modules/units of instruction as assigned by the QAVTC instructor. The time of day will need to be 2:30 – 3:20 pm M-F so the QAVTC instructor will be fully available for live interaction with students through email, live chat or even a “go-to-meeting” type of format to be utilized (M, T, TH, FR) in order for the students to obtain immediate feedback as needed, only with the instructor not in the same room. Wednesdays will be designated as independent online work time days for students as directed by the instructor. It is expected that participating students will be supervised in either a computer lab, study hall, library or other structured environment at the home school. The QAVTC teachers will definitely be available M, T, TH, F, with Wednesday availability to be announced dependent upon whether or not the teacher has a “live” STP class going on.

The online platform will also have the capacity for the student to access the web-based modules from any computer (at home, etc.) with good Internet access, in order to be able to work on assigned learning modules (and/or homework) outside of the regular live meeting times with the instructor.

Online Content Learning Time Live Sessions: 2:30 – 3:20 pm Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, (Wed. designated independent student content learning work time)

Lab/Hands-on Work-based Learning Delivery: The total number of lab days to be held at QAVTC would be 12, and is anticipated to work as follows. A set calendar schedule of full school day lab/live work days would be set for the year, with the understanding that students participating in the QAVTC Blended Learning class would be permitted to travel to, or be transported to QAVTC for these days. The lab days would follow the QAVTC start and end times for the day, or be negotiated with the home school to best match schedules for transportation purposes.

QAVTC Blended Learning courses will provide students with 1.5 credits – based on the required live online/class sessions plus the total lab day time. This delivery model sets up a ratio of 66% content learning to 33% lab/work-based learning experiences. However, some of the online class content time will incorporate simulations or other interactive learning activities (simulating some lab activities), so in reality – the online content to lab ratio should be closer to 50/50.

Lab Day times: 7:30 am – 2:25 pm (or as negotiated with home school)

Attendance: Attendance on the 12 lab days is required – if a lab day has to be missed for any reason, the student will need to arrange with the teacher to make up the time needed to complete the lab learning activities for the day missed. Students would be allowed one unexcused absence from lab days, but a second unexcused absence would result in the student being dropped from the course with no credit issued for the semester of the drop. Unexcused absences will be as defined in the QAVTC STP Student Handbook. The daily online content sessions would be treated like a regular day class, and follow home school attendance and make up work policies.

Students will be expected to be engaged on the web-based learning system used for their class during the scheduled content learning class times. Student time on the system will be monitored by the instructor of the class. If it appears that the time a student is on the system is not consistent with expectations, the instructor will advise the home school principal or designated Blended Learning Course home school supervisor.
